VINCENT VAN GOGH BEDROOM IN ARLES
In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) left the gray chill of Paris for the warmth of Arles in southern France where the bright light and vivid colors of the countryside inspired some of his most famous paintings. By the spring, he rented a house where he hoped to establish an artists’ collective. Excited by the new space, he painted The Bedroom in Arles, and wrote to his brother Theo, “it is painting in free flat tints like the Japanese prints.” Paul Gauguin arrived in October, and while Vincent was initially thrilled to have a fellow artist working with him, their temperaments soon clashed. Van Gogh suffered a nervous breakdown in late December, during which he famously presented part of his own ear to a local prostitute. The next year van Gogh suffered another breakdown, and in May 1889, he admitted himself to the asylum at Saint-Rémy. While there, he painted two more versions of The Bedroom, each expressing his search for peace and tranquility, using the symbolism of color in his carefully chosen palette.
