This serene view from the banks of the Rhône River features a rich palette of blue: Prussian blue, ultramarine and cobalt. The city gas lights glimmer an intense orange and are reflected in the water while luminous stars twinkle against a velvety night sky. Two lovers blithely stroll along the river in the foreground. Painted before his stay at the asylum, Starry Night Over the Rhône illustrates his distinctive approach to painting nocturnal scenes and captures a rare moment of calm in the chaotic final years of his life.
